Yesterday morning, we awoke to find the first snow of the year had fallen during the night, covering the orchard in a blanket of white. We wasted no time in running out to enjoy the changed landscape and even before breakfast, there were tracks trailing across the driveway and little snowmen appearing here and there. I got a warm fire roaring in the woodstove, some hot coffee brewed, and enjoyed the added beauty of my snowy morning.
The paper snow stars we hang in the window to remind of snow in this mild climate suddenly took on a new dimension set against the white backdrop outside. They made for quite a striking view in the soft morning light.
The garden and greenhouse were covered in a mantle of white, and huge flakes just kept on falling.
I really enjoyed seeing the different trees and plants dusted in snow. It added this whole new magical element that changed as the snow warmed up and started melting off later in the day.
We ended up with a delayed start for school, which meant we started right off with the Winter Assembly, and went right into a snowy recess with an all school snowball fight. Children from every grade were out there volleying snowballs back and forth with laughter ringing out in the air. It was great fun.
It sounds like more snow may be on its way in time for the Solstice, and I am welcoming it.
It's good to see you again, Winter.
